Gander Mtn. Ludington Offshore Classic

The Gander Mountain Ludington Offshore Classic is usually the largest tournament on Lake Michigan and it did not disappoint this year with close to 200 teams participating in the Pro/AM.   The other events of the week also showed strong particiipaion with 89 in the Ruboy, 129 in the Youth tournament, and 80+ teams in the Ladies Pro/AM.

Ludington tournament week always kicks off with the Ruboy Thursday, a memorial event named after the late, great Pete Ruboyianes, one of the godfathers of Great Lakes salmon fishing.   89 boats competed in this year's Ruboy, which was won by Hammbone (Ludington), whose box included a monster 23.5 lb. king.  Trout Scout (Manistee) was in second by a mere tenth of a pound, with Get Some (Saugatuck) and Finweaver (Ludington) in third and fourth respectively.

Friday dawned with cooler temps and rain, and the start of the Ladies and Youth events was delayed 15 minutes to let the visibility improve.   On the Pro side, Riverside (Manistee) was the big winner, running north almost to Manistee and ending with a 5 fish box that weighed in at 62,25 lbs.  Polecat (Ludington) and Sportsmen (Pentwater) were close behind in second and third.  The AM winner was Lake Effect II (Pentwater) who fished south near the Little Point for their 60.95 box of 5 fish...a touch over 12 lbs. average.

Saturday was a great day on the lake for the start of the weekend's Pro/AM main event.  The weather was clear and waves were 1-2'.  Most of the boats ran north toward Manistee with many fishing the area just north of Big Point Sable around the tribal nets.   A smaller portion of the fleet ran south toward the Little Point Sable area.  Fish were being caught everywhere in good numbers, and at the end of Day One, Hot Ticket was in the lead on the Pro side, followed by Living the Dream (Grand Haven) in second, and Riverside (Manistee), the Pro Ladies' winner, in third.  Showing their consistency, the AM leader after Day One was Lake Effect II (Pentwater) who had won the Ladies AM event the day before.

Saturday's overnight wave forecast for Sunday looked bad with NOAA calling for 4-7' waves offshore with wind shifting to the WNW.  But thankfully, the forecasters got it wrong with wind staying out of the S and waves that were 1' or less.   Again, the fleet split, with some headed north and some south.  Both directions had their advantages, but the south prevailed, with Living the Dream (Grand Haven) taking the Pro division win after fishing near Little Point.  They were followed by Best Chance Too (Saugatuck) in 2nd, who had fished north near Manistee.  Finishing out the top 3 in Pro was KC-1 (Muskegon) who made a strong move from 17th after Day One.  KC-1 had the biggest box of the tournament on Day Two with 135.2 lbs fishing the south waters! The Huntington GL2S Championship Points Series saw quite a bit of movement as well, with Ludington winner, Living the Dream moving up into second place, just behind leader, Sea Flea, who did not fish Ludington.   KC-1 also moved up, ending in third, followed closely by Dreamweaver and Blue Fairways.   (Click here for the Big Jon Sports CPS Scoreboard)
