GL2S.09 Update
When we launched GL2S in November of 2007, gas was around $2.50/gallon, the stock market was near 14,000, and the economic outlook was generally optimistic. Who could have predicted that during the 2008 season, gas would go as high as $4.50/gallon (more on the water), the stock market would be less than 8,000, the American auto industry along with many others would be in critical condition, and the economy would hit a brick wall?  Looking back, 2008 and 2009 have become the perfect storm of negative factors in which to launch this new venture.

Although we received enthusiastic support from tournament anglers, most of the traditional tournament sponsors from the fishing industry were already feeling the pinch of a slowing economy.  We knew going in that our long-term success depended on getting the participation of corporate sponsors from outside the fishing industry.  Given the current economic conditions, a number of corporate sponsors who were engaged in various stages of participation with GL2S have had to deal with the harsh realities of reduced marketing budgets and tighter constraints on their remaining spending.

Living the Dream wins 2008 Huntington GL2S CPS!

After a thrilling, season-long championship race involving some of the best Pro teams on Lake Michigan, Living the Dream from Grand Haven captured 1st Place in the inaugural Huntington GL2S Championship Points Series (CPS)

Living the Dream was on fire in 2008, with a 1st Place finish in South Haven, another 1st Place in Ludington, and, after using two Culls, yet another 1st Place at the season finale in Saugatuck.  This allowed them to win the CPS with a perfect score of 465 points.

Captain Tony Salerno and his "Dream Team" of Andy LeClaire, Luke Triplett, and Capt. Willis Kerridge took home the $10,000 1st Place check after a final event shoot-out with perennial champs Best Chance Too who finished in 2nd.   Hour Time out of Sturgeon Bay, WI and Sea Flea from Grand Haven took 3rd and 4th Place honors respectively.

Dream Teammates Matt Salerno, Andy Miller, Chad Fett, Geoff Newmeyer, and of course Gary Salerno, were also instrumental in Living the Dream's success this season.

Many thanks to our title sponsor, Huntington Bank and our scoring sponsor, BIg Jon Sports for making the 2008 GL2S season a rousing success and making the Championship Points Series possible.  (Click here for the Big Jon Sports CPS Scoreboard)

Huntington ODC Big Lake Classic

Although there are more tournaments yet to come in the northern part of the lake, the Huntington Big Lake Classic in Saugatuck this past weekend marked the end of the 2008 season for the GL2S crew.   Long known as the Waypoint/Tower Marine Pro/Am, this tournament had new management this year from the great folks at Saugatuck's Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC) and new title sponsorship from Huntington Bank.  The ODC is a non-profit organization devoted to wildlife and fisheries conservation and education.   Assisted by Waypoint tournament founders, Denny and Linda Allen, the ODC gang did a fine job with their inaugural big lake fishing event.

All in all, it was a great way to close out the season for many tournament anglers; a weekend to remember, with some drama, some unpredictable weather, great friends, great food and great fun all playing big roles.  As in previous years, the weigh-in was handled at Tower Marine on the south side of the Kalamazoo River.  But new this year, the Captain's meeting, meals, and other festivities and awards were moved across the river to Coral Gables restaurant in downtown Saugatuck.  This was a great venue for the Huntington Big Lake Classic, with locals and tourists alike stopping to see what was going on, and joining the tournament anglers in some adult beverages, good food and great conversation.

Day One of the Big Lake Classic was sunny, warm,  but somewhat windy with 2-4' waves.  As the day went on, the wind continued to build and by the end of the fishing period, it was 4-5' with some larger rollers mixed in.   Since the Big Lake Classic allows boats to leave from either Saugatuck or Holland, the fleet was fishing some different waters.  The Holland-based boats went north toward Grand Haven and Port Sheldon, while the Saugatuck boats went south toward South Haven.  The boxes on Day One showed that fish were prevalent in both areas, with JJ (Holland) bringing in the big box of the day in the Pro division with 117.24 lbs.  and 247.24 pts.  They were followed in the pro standings by Profishient (Saugatuck) and Team Huntington on the Black Betty II (Saugatuck).  On the AM side, the Day One leader was Bonaventure with 246.82 pts., followed by Chuck Wagon (Saugatuck), Pier Addiction (Holland), Giv-n-In (Saugatuck) and Double Down (Zeeland).

As the scoring was completed and teams strategized for Day Two, the big topic was the weather.  The overnight forecast called for 4-7' waves and a stiff WNW wind.  There was much speculation that Day Two might be cancelled and the Day One leaders would win the tournament by default.

As Day Two dawned, it was apparent that those who wanted to fish were going to get their wish.  The winds were down from the night before, and the waves were only 2-3'.   The temperature had dropped considerably, leading many teams to don their foul weather gear to try and stay warm. As the day went on, the wind began to build, and by the end of the fishing session, the waves were in the 4-7' range with some 8 footers mixed in.  But by then, the fish had all been caught, the teams were on their way back to port, and everyone had done their best to move up.

In the Pros, Living the Dream (Grand Haven) brought in a box of 100.3 lbs. and made a huge jump into the lead from their spot in 5th place after Day One.  But they had to wait for Blue Chip (Saugatuck) and JJ (Holland) to weigh-in before they knew their ultimate fate.  Blue Chip almost caught the Dream boys, but fell a mere .42 pts. short.  JJ, the leader after Day One, could not catch the Dream team either, and ended up in 4th Place, with Profishient (Saugatuck) sliding into the 3rd spot.  (Click here for full Pro results)

There was plenty of Day Two drama on the AM side of the tournament as well, with Giv-n-In (Saugatuck) coming in with a huge 109.60 lb. cooler to move up from 4th into 1st Place.   Team Double Down (Zeeland) also had a great second day that propelled them into 2nd, with Chuck Wagon falling to 3rd.  (Click here for full AM results)

Saugatuck also marked the final stop on the season-long Huntington GL2S Championship Points Series.   Once again, there was plenty of drama to be had.   Going into this event, Best Chance Too (Saugatuck) was holding a slight lead over Living the Dream (Grand Haven).  Living the Dream elected to use their last cull and discard their 9th Place finish in Manistee in hopes of catching Best Chance TooBest Chance Too decided to stand pat with their series lead and hope that Living the Dream stumbled.  But as it turned out, the Dream boys put together 2 good days of fishing and not only won the tournament, but passed Best Chance Too to take home the Huntington GL2S Championship Points Series' 1st Place honors and the $10,000 first prize.   Hour Time (Sturgeon Bay) ended the season in 3rd Place while Sea Flea (Grand Haven) took 4th Place honors. Huntington Big Red Classic

The Huntington Big Red Classic in Holland marks the return of the tournament circuit to the southern portion of Lake Michigan.  This tournament is operated by the Big Red Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which donates it's proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland.

The weekend kicked off with a new Ladies tournament on Friday.  The inaugural Ladies event was won by Team STR8 Hookin' fishing on JJ with a 6 fish box of 61.74 lbs.  (Click here for full Ladies results)

The Captain's meeting on Friday evening was highlighted by a terrific grilled chicken dinner, catered by local favorite, the Beachwood Inn.  This dinner is put on in appreciation of the tournament's valued sponsors, and was very well attended by sponsors and participants alike.

The weather forecast for Day One of the Pro/AM event was great...7 knot winds and 2' or less waves.  Unfortunately, someone forgot to send Mother Nature the memo, and the actual conditions were much different.  With stiff 15-20 knot winds out of the NW, the waves quickly built to 4-5'.  The fish that had been plentiful during Thursday and Friday's pre-fishing and Ladies events left the area and fishing was tough for most teams.  While the early bite was good, it shut down as soon as the sun cleared the trees.   At the end of Day One, only 3 Pro teams got their 12 fish limit, while others struggled to find their last few fish.  Day One's Pro leader was Profishient (Saugatuck), who was in early with 108.4 lbs.   Win-n-Angel (St. Joseph) had the big box of the day with 112.3 lbs, but only managed to boat 11 fish, which moved them down the standings into 3rd.  To add insult to injury, Win-n-Angel blew a motor during the morning run, but still managed to finish the tournament running on only one engine.  Fish-N-Fin (Saugatuck), last year's Big Red Classic winner, brought in the Big Fish of Day One with a 21.34 lb. King  (Click here for full Big Fish - Saturday results)

On the AM side, only 2 boats of the 55 that weighed in got their 12 fish limits on Day One, while the rest of the field struggled to get their fish.  The Day One AM leader was Holland-based Ofishially Hooked, with Day One's big box of the tournament with 113.8 lbs. followed by Giv-n-In (South Haven) with 96.9 lbs.

On Day Two, the weatherman finally got it right as the day began with calm seas and light winds.  It was a spectacular day on the lake, and everyone enjoyed it immensely after the rough seas of the day before.  Despite the nice weather, fishing was still tough for most, as few teams came to the weigh-in with limit catches.  Most weights were down from Day One as well.  Black Betty II (Saugatuck) had the top box of Day Two in the Pro's with 92.76 lbs., but Fish-N-Fin (Saugatuck) put the best two day total together to win the Pro Division for the second year in a row with a total score of 427.34 pts., edging out Best Chance Too (Saugatuck) (Click here for full Pro results)

The AM's had a hard time getting their fish as well.  Giv-n-In (South Haven) had the big box on Day Two of 98.86 lbs., and that moved them into 1st Place giving them the win in the AM division.   They were followed by Ofishially Hooked (Holland) in 2nd and Double Down (Zeeland) in 3rd.  Pier Addiction (Holland) made the big move of Day Two with a great 98.18 lb. box, which moved them from 15th to 5th. The Huntington GL2S Championship Points Series saw some drama develop during the Huntington Big Red Classic as well.  Best Chance Too (Saugatuck) moved into 1st Place in the CPS standings, bumping Living the Dream into 2nd, and Hour Time into 3rd.  This sets up a season-ending clash at the Huntington Big Lake Classic in Saugatuck next weekend, as Best Chance Too and Living the Dream will battle it out for the $10,000 dollar first prize.  (Click here for the Big Jon Sports CPS Scoreboard)

Manistee Salmon Splash

The Manistee Salmon Splash is made up of a group of tournament events that happen over the course of a five day period.  The 2008 events included the Ladies Splash, the Salmon Splash, the Big Boys, the Big Fish, the 333 and the Best of the Best.

The Salmon Splash festivities kicked off on Friday, July 25 with the Ladies Splash.  Fishing in rolling 4' seas, 33 ladies teams competed, weighing in their best 5 fish catch.  Winner's honors went to the ladies of Hour Time (Sturgeon Bay), Rita, Jennifer, Theresa, Linda and Linda who landed an awesome box of 76.05 lbs. narrowly edging out Netminder (Onekama) who had 76.00 lbs. (Click here for full Ladies results)

The two day Pro/AM event started on Saturday, with clear skies and 1-3' seas out of the WSW.  At the 6 AM start, teams scattered to their preferred fishing locations with the bulk of the teams heading south to fish the stretch of lake between Manistee and Big Sable Point.  That turned out to be a mistake, as the biggest boxes and earliest catches mostly came from those fishing north near Onekama.   Hawg Tied was in at 8:00 AM with the biggest box of Day One for the Pros, a whopping 145.1 lbs.  They were followed by Sandpiper III, Stinger, Blue Fairways, and Renegade.  On the AM side, the Day One leader was Almost Paradise with 132.7 lbs., with Alibi, Sarah J, Spend A Buck, and Bugeye rounding out the top five.

Day Two of the Pro/AM arrived with strong winds out of the WNW at 15-20 kts.  At 5:30 AM, the decision was made to delay the start by one hour to allow inspection of the lake conditions in better light.  After a weather boat went out, the decision was made to start the tournament at 7:00 AM and not extend the fishing period past the original 1:00 PM end time.  These decisions altered many teams' strategy as the 7:00 start eliminated the strong early bite many teams were counting on, and the shortened fishing period meant that getting your limit was even more important than usual.

It was tough fishing as the seas built to 4-7', with many teams having difficulties setting up productive trolls.  Unlike Day One, those fishing north struggled to get their fish, with many of the Day One leaders coming in short of their limits.  At the end of the day, local team Riverside took top honors in the Pro division with a total of 441.3 pts.  They were followed by Hunter (Ludington), Nibbles (Frankfort), Hour Time (Sturgeon Bay) and Team Albemarle (Sturgeon Bay).  Hour Time had the big catch of Day Two with 130.15 lbs., giving them wins in the Second Chance tournament and the 333 to add to their Ladies' crown. (Click here for full Pro results)

1. Riverside
2. Hunter
3. Nibbles
4. Hour Time
5. Team Albemarle

The AM division winner was Hammbone (Ludington) with 413.5 pts.  They made a nice move up from 7th place on Day One to take the top honors.  (Click here for full AM results)

1. Hammbone
2. Spend A Buck
3. Fish Fingers
4. Alibi
5. Jerry Riggin

The Big Boys event is a Pro side bet with a separate entry fee.  The Big Boys winner is usually the winner of the Pros, but for the second year in a row, the Pro winner was not entered in the Big Boys championship.  This proved to be a costly mistake for Riverside, and one that moved Hunter into first place as the 2008 Big Boys champ.  (Click here for full Big Boys results)

Big Fish winner for the weekend was Obsession, who boated a nice 21.6 lb. King.  They were followed by Toy Box, Pier Pressure, and Fuzzy Bear who all caught fish over 20 lbs. (Click here for full Big Fish results)

There was a lot of movement in the Huntington GL2S Championship Points Series as well, as the seventh event of the GL2S season concluded.   Living the Dream opted to use a cull and discard their Grand Haven finish, and they moved up the rankings into first place.  Hour Time moved into second, as Sea Flea fell to third.  With only two events left in the CPS for 2008, the race promises to go down to the wire as some very good teams are still in it. Gander Mtn. Ludington Offshore Classic

The Gander Mountain Ludington Offshore Classic is usually the largest tournament on Lake Michigan and it did not disappoint this year with close to 200 teams participating in the Pro/AM.   The other events of the week also showed strong particiipaion with 89 in the Ruboy, 129 in the Youth tournament, and 80+ teams in the Ladies Pro/AM.

Ludington tournament week always kicks off with the Ruboy Thursday, a memorial event named after the late, great Pete Ruboyianes, one of the godfathers of Great Lakes salmon fishing.   89 boats competed in this year's Ruboy, which was won by Hammbone (Ludington), whose box included a monster 23.5 lb. king.  Trout Scout (Manistee) was in second by a mere tenth of a pound, with Get Some (Saugatuck) and Finweaver (Ludington) in third and fourth respectively.

Friday dawned with cooler temps and rain, and the start of the Ladies and Youth events was delayed 15 minutes to let the visibility improve.   On the Pro side, Riverside (Manistee) was the big winner, running north almost to Manistee and ending with a 5 fish box that weighed in at 62,25 lbs.  Polecat (Ludington) and Sportsmen (Pentwater) were close behind in second and third.  The AM winner was Lake Effect II (Pentwater) who fished south near the Little Point for their 60.95 box of 5 fish...a touch over 12 lbs. average.

Saturday was a great day on the lake for the start of the weekend's Pro/AM main event.  The weather was clear and waves were 1-2'.  Most of the boats ran north toward Manistee with many fishing the area just north of Big Point Sable around the tribal nets.   A smaller portion of the fleet ran south toward the Little Point Sable area.  Fish were being caught everywhere in good numbers, and at the end of Day One, Hot Ticket was in the lead on the Pro side, followed by Living the Dream (Grand Haven) in second, and Riverside (Manistee), the Pro Ladies' winner, in third.  Showing their consistency, the AM leader after Day One was Lake Effect II (Pentwater) who had won the Ladies AM event the day before.

Saturday's overnight wave forecast for Sunday looked bad with NOAA calling for 4-7' waves offshore with wind shifting to the WNW.  But thankfully, the forecasters got it wrong with wind staying out of the S and waves that were 1' or less.   Again, the fleet split, with some headed north and some south.  Both directions had their advantages, but the south prevailed, with Living the Dream (Grand Haven) taking the Pro division win after fishing near Little Point.  They were followed by Best Chance Too (Saugatuck) in 2nd, who had fished north near Manistee.  Finishing out the top 3 in Pro was KC-1 (Muskegon) who made a strong move from 17th after Day One.  KC-1 had the biggest box of the tournament on Day Two with 135.2 lbs fishing the south waters! Huntington Presents the Cabela's Salmon Shootout

After successful Corporate outing on Thursday and a well-attended Women & Kids event on Friday, Saturday's Pro/AM saw a dangerous weather front move through the Muskegon area, which hit the pier heads almost exactly at the original start time of 6 AM.  A weather delay was put in place at 4:45 AM in anticipation of the storm and the start was originally postponed until 8 AM with a weather call scheduled for 7 AM.

At 7 AM the radar still indicated severe storms cells mixed in with the trailing rain from the original front stretching across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin.  Lightning strike maps showed active cells still producing numerous lightning strikes although wind speeds and direction had dropped from the original front.  Accordingly, at 7 AM, the determination was made to cancel Saturday's fishing and competitors were allowed to continue pre-fishing.

Sunday dawned with clear skies and a wave and wind forecast that looked like it should be fishable.  According to the NOAA forecast, wind conditions were expected to improve as the day went on.  A weather boat was out on the lake at 5:20 AM, and reported 3-5 foot seas with strong winds out of the West.  The decision was made to proceed with the tournament, and the competitors headed out to the lake.   Prior to the tournament start, the 6 weather boats were polled and all declared the conditions to be fishable.  The tournament started on schedule at 6 AM.  After the start, instead of the predicted improvement, conditions continued to deteriorate.  At 7 AM the weather boats were polled again, and the consensus was that conditions had worsened.   Based on the weather boat input, at 7:05 AM the call was made to cancel the tournament, and all boats were urged to return to harbor safely.

Lakeside Marine/Muskegon Chronicle Women and Kids Classic

The Muskegon Sportfishing Association held the Lakeside Marine & Muskegon Chronicle Women and Kids Classic Friday July 11th out of Great Lakes Marina in Muskegon, MI.  Particpation was strong, with 20 Pro teams and 23 Am teams registering to compete in the 7am to 12pm contest.  The contest was a 9 rod only, catch your DNR limit, but weigh your biggest 5 fish.

Some very nice 5 fish catches were brought to the scales and a good time was had by most teams although 3' to 4' rollers had more then a few queasy anglers.  The queasiness was not apparent as hearty appetites met at the awards presentation which included a cookout with the Knights of Columbus masterfully preparing brats and hot dogs for the competitors.

Topping the Pro Dvision was Princess Bel with a nice box tipping the scales at 66.45 lbs. followed closely Run-N-Gun with 62.65 lbs. The Pro Top 5 (Click Here - Full Results)

Huntington's Grand Haven Offshore Challenge
Great fishing and variable weather conditions were the fare at the 2008 Huntington's Grand Haven Offshore Challenge. The tournament ended on a fantastic note with near perfect conditions of sun and flat water which followed a number of days of variable conditions which included winds, rain, thunderstorms, and more sun.

All three days of events went off successfully leading with the Ladies and Kids event of Friday where 30+ plus boats went out to compete and they had to - compete with the weather which had the heaviest rain storms I've seen in some time but also had good to great fishing. The Ladies and Kids was won on the Pro side by Hot Spot followed by Reel Action and Thunderduck, and the Am side the winner was Water Dog followed by Slip Knot and In Pursuit.

The Pro/Am looked to be more of the same as a thunderstorm cell swept in on the competitors as they waited outside the pier heads for the tournament to start. Luckliy the weather committee had the full use of technology including Radar and Sirius Satellite Weather integrated with their Raymarine electronics to indicate that the storm was moving fairly quickly and was a small cell that had nothing behind it. The weather committee smartly chose to keep the competitors outside the piers and start the tournament on time instead of risking having the boats in the channel and being slammed by the storm in there with no room to maneuver, placing the boats at further risk. Fifteen minutes after the start the storm had moved through and wonderful blue skies greeted the competitors as they began setting up on their spots.

Day one teams were required to donate their catch and that donation amounted to 3600 raw pounds of fish to the Teen Challenge for their food bank. Sunday was optional but many teams donated their fish so another great amount was donated resulting in some valuable chartiable giving from the tournament and its competitors

The Pro Division was taken by Ludington's Blue Fairways with a wire-to-wire win putting up a big number on the first day following up with just enough to hold off the competition. Blue Fairways posted a winning score of 371.5, no bonus points for trout were awarded just simply ten points per fish and a point per pound, followed closely by The Edge with 369.85 in second and Best Chance Too with 368.8 in third. The Pro field was as tight as it gets with just over 10 points seperating the Top 5 (Click Here - Full Results)

The Huntington Championship Point Series (GL2S.CPS) had 9 boats take scores in Grand Haven and some reshuffling in the top of the series. Blue Fairways the leader of CPS after the previous event and Pro winner decided against taking a cull in Grand Haven and missed receiving the ever important first place points which allowed Sea Flea to leap into first with a total of 396 pts. The field is tight with many opportunities for movement with five events still to go. (Click Here - Big Jon Sports Scoreboard)

South Haven Steelheaders Big Jon Pro/Am

The South Haven Big Jon Pro/Am is in the record books and after all the weather that Michigan has to offer the scores are in.  Day one started with a hour delay as the tournament committee pondered weather reports, that delay turned into a cancellation of the fishing day.  But as Michigan weather goes, if you don't like the weather now wait five minutes proved to be true as available weather forecasts were completely wrong and the day turned out to be fabulous and water conditions settled within a couple hours of the decision.

Day 2 revealed windy initial conditions again but the forecasts indicated that the winds should tail and settle down the water.  Refer back to the Michigan Rule. Those forecasts proved to be wrong again as the winds stayed on the offensive delivering consistently building seas throughout the day forcing the tournament to be called more than an hour early.  Stop fishing was set for 11:30 leaving 45 minutes for boats to return to pierhead at 12:15 after that period.

This early call of the tournament threw a wrench into many strategies as the offshore fishery consistently had produced good catches during prefishing and teams that were ready, willing, and able made the run some in excess of 30 miles.  Those teams had to let everything hang out and take the abusive, and I don't think anyone would say abusive was an overstatement, run back in seas that had wave sets in the 10' neighborhood - perhaps more in cases.  As with any strategy sometimes it works out and some times it doesn't as you'll see some negative weights as penalties of 10 points (pounds) per minute were assesed for late arrivals.

The Pro Division crowned a new champ - Living the Dream - who beat it in from the offshore waters they had fished the entire week bringing an 11 fish box that weighed 94 lbs. resulting in a score of 234 points to secure first place.  Second place was taken by 2007 champ Best Chance Too with a total of 206.05 points, and Manistee Mama in an extremely close third with 205.15 points. The Amateur division was split into 2 divisions for the first time with the traditional Am and the 24' and Under division.  Spend A Buck did the toughest thing in tournament fishing by delivering a back to back win bringing the overall tournament wide highest score of 278.1 points and earning the travelling trophy as well as the champions trophy.  Giv-n-In took second with Coho's Aim in a distant third.  The Top 5 (Click Here - Full Results )
