"This televised contest, with big cash prizes, can do a lot to promote Michigan City, and city government and everyone else who can should assist." -- Editor, The News Dispatch
There is only one tournament that is part of the "Tournament Trail" as of 2008 and that is the Sturgeon Bay Offshore Challenge.
We aren't purposefully excluding WI and we named it the Great Lakes Salmon Series to be more inclusive instead of the Lake Michigan or Michigan Salmon Series.
I think tournaments such as Waukegan or Racine would fit the format perfectly and there may be others that are non-derby formats that I'm not aware of. If you know of some likely candidates feel free to list them here - if you have relationships or know people involved with the tourney that would be even better feel free to email their contact info to us.
Realistically we had to start somewhere and not all of the listed tournaments will be GL2S events and the loosely related tournaments of the "Tournament Trail" seemed like a great place to start.
I fish extensively on the WI side and would agree with the votes for Waukegan and Racine.
I would also have to add a very under-rated port in Wisconsin: Sheboygan. Sheboygan is a multi species port that holds big fish. Its also in the center of the Lake and is open to people to travel there. Sturgeon Bay is a unique fishery, but it is a trek for most boats. Sheboygan would be open to teams from the North or South basin.
Don't know much about Sheboygan other then some friends blast over from Ludington on the weekend occasionally. I know there is a Skipper Buds over there with a pretty large marina facility - the key for any port is to have docking infrastructure to support enough boats to have a decent sized tournament.
Yes, there is a large Skipper Buds Marina here in Sheboygan. Also, there are some transient slips along the Boardwalk, which is a few blocks long with shops and bars. There is a nice business/family resort called Blue Harbor as well that could support visitors. All in all, its a nice port with a lot of potential.
Having fished the Wisconsin side of the lake for many years, I would vote for the following locales to step up to the plate and get on board with the GL2S.
1. Waukegan
2. NorthPoint
3. Kenosha
4. Racine
5. Milwaukee
6. Sheboygan
I've fished out of each of these ports, and ALL of them have adequate facilities to host such an event. I will say that WI and Illinois tournaments seem to follow more of a "big fish derby" type of atmosphere, but for sure the Pfc. Geoffrey Morris and Bob Uecker Invitational would be PRIME candidates for this venture. I would also surmise that Brew City would be a good candidate as well.
What needs to happen is the folks that are heavily involved in groups such as Salmon Unlimited to open up discussions regarding the possibility of joining up with the GL2S.
